And the winner of the Fall Tea Stylista contest is….. Tatum from Eugene, Oregon!
We were so impressed by her distinct sense of style and use of accessories to personalize all her Tea outfits! Tatum describes her style as “fun, colorful, and unique” and she absolutely loves to accessorize her looks with scarves, boots, and jewelry. Her fashion influences are her mom, friends, and occasionally someone or something on TV or in a catalog will inspire her as well.
Tatum will be coming to San Francisco in December for a tour of the Tea studio and a personal photo shoot where she can showcase all her favorite Tea outfits! We’re so excited to meet her and can’t wait to congraulate her in person!
A big thanks to everyone who entered our Fall Stylista contest, we loved seeing everyone’s photos and all their creative Tea outfits!

With much excitement, we’re proud to announce the finalists for the Fall 2011 Stylista competition!
We were on a search for fashion-forward 8-12 year olds to show us their unique style and we couldn’t be happier with the submissions we received! Fashionistas from all across the United States submitted their photos online or by visiting their local Tea retailer. Specifically, these stylish boys and girls created fantastic outfits that featured at least two pieces of Tea clothing.
The winner will receive an all expenses paid trip to San Francisco for a behind the scenes tour of the Tea headquarters. Also, the winner will have her own photo shoot where she is able to show off all her fashionable outfits in front of the camera!
It was incredibly challenging to choose since we received quite a few outstanding candidates, but a small group on Tea’s Creative team evaluated all submissions based on the child’s creativity, visual flair, and how much his or her outfit embodied the Tea spirit. After much deliberation, the selection committee chose three finalists and one honorable mention:
Tatum
From Eugene, OR, 8 year old Tatum enjoys Tea because of the “fabulous colors, unique style, and the clothing is more than anything, fun to wear!”

Juliana
From Orland, CA, 10 year old Juliana provided us quite a few reasons on why she loves Tea. She told us “I love Tea because I like to draw, paint, and create sculptures and the clothes show my creative side. I can come up with lots of different outfits with just a few dresses and shirts from Tea.”
Halle
9 year old, Halle from Reno, NV adores Tea for the “amazing styles and fabrics!”
Fiona [Honorable Mention]
Fiona, from Bozeman MT, is 10 years old and submitted such a compelling story for why she loves Tea. She stated “. I love to wear your clothes because they express my individual style, which is countryside chic. I also love to wear your clothes because I love to travel, and your clothes remind me of our recent family trips to eastern Europe and Mexico. As well as traveling, I also enjoy drawing. Your catalogs and your clothes inspire my imagination to create beautiful clothes for the little girls in my pictures. Thank you, Tea, for designing the most wonderful clothes and outfits!”
A big thanks to everyone who participated in our Fall Stylista contest! Check back on October 28th for the announcement of the winner, which will be selected by Tea’s Co-founder Emily Meyer. Good luck to all our finalists and stay tuned for the winner!
To help everyone at Tea go there, we make a yearly contribution to each employee for international travel and exploration. Upon their return, our Tea travelers write blog posts to share their adventures with all of us (and the world).
Welcome to part 1 of Jess’s Bali adventures. Let’s go there!
Whenever I travel, I really enjoy going on runs as a way to explore a new place and orient myself. My trip to Bali, Indonesia was no different. After arriving at the beautiful Villa Santai where I would stay while in Tenah Merah, Ubud, I put on my running shoes and left to go check out some nearby villages. I had no idea that a casual run would turn into such an adventure.
I started uphill through a village filled with temples, homes, and snack stands.
There were also a few stray dogs lining the streets. I had been warned about Balinese stray dogs and the recent case of rabies that had been reported on the island. I had been advised to carry a stone or stick with me to throw at them, as this would surely scare them away. Although I try to avoid confrontations with animals, especially stray, untrained ones, I thought it best to carry a little stick with me just in case.
As I made my way uphill, I pondered how beautiful the day was. The sun was shining on the rice fields on either side of me.
The hot, tropical air felt lovely as I ran past. I waved hello to a group of children, smiled at the lady running the snack stand, and greeted an old man passing by with “Selamat Pagi!” (Good Morning).
Then, in the next moment, I came across a large pack of dogs in the path ahead of me. Instantly, I thought to myself, remain calm, no worries. Sing ken ken! But then I noticed a few ears perk up and several heads rise. A couple of them stood up and faced me.
Now I’m scared. They started to approach. I glanced around at the villagers, with a worried, helpless look on my face. That’s when they started to bark at me. At this point, I realized that I had completely stopped moving. I swatted my lame little stick around a few times, accomplishing nothing.
Finally, a little old lady came up to me and scared the pack of dogs off with a shout and a few swoops of her hand. She then came upto me and took the little stick from my hand. She chuckled, mumbled something at me in Balinese, trying to communicate that if I swat at the dogs, they grow more aggressive, thinking I am trying to attack them. She patted me on the back and sent me off, meanwhile still warding off the dogs for me as I made my way through the village. I thanked her, “Terri makahse bankyak!”, and carried on uphill, away from the village.
I would learn later that the Balinese believe stray dogs are re-incarnated ancestors and family members who have behaved badly. That is why they are treated so poorly by the locals.
As I continued up the road, I heard a big commotion. I noticed a little soccer field, so I made my way toward the voices to see what was happening there. I saw a few kids playing soccer, but looking beyond, I noticed a large group of people gathered. I made my way there, curious to see what was taking place. As I got closer, I saw it was a rooster fight. Even though I am vegetarian and also dislike violence between animals, especially for sport, I decided to put judgment aside and check out the tournament. What I saw was better than what I had anticipated. It seemed like every man in the village had joined.
Each male had a pet fighting rooster. They’d wait around, and then enter their rooster into the main fight. There were a few little kids there with their dads, but no women. I was the only woman there, dressed in a pair of running shoes, shorts, a workout shirt and an iPod. I thought they would shoo/send me away, but they were quite welcoming.
After a little while, I moved on and continued my run, only to encounter even more dogs. This time, my village lady friend was not there to help me. I panicked a little until I saw a group of bicyclists approaching. They saw the look of terror on my face and said, “Run with us!” So I started running and they surrounded me in a protective circle of bicycles as we passed by the rabid dogs. It was fun!
The return trip was no less exciting. The locals were burning their fields, blocking the road with dense smoke. Fortunately, a number of them helped me around the smoke by showing me where I could run through some rice fields.
I also managed to dart into a few homes whose owners had left the front door open. Balinese homes tend to be a collection of smaller buildings in a courtyard. There are living quarters along with a small open-air temple people build in their homes. I got a few laughs from some of the women and kids, smiled, and continued my adventure.
At one point, I started missing the bicycle gang. Instead, a man from the village had me run alongside him as he made his way through the dog packs on his scooter. That resulted in a good workout. Again I thanked him, and he responded “sama-sama” (you’re welcome).
When I returned to the villa, my friends asked me how my run was. I replied simply, “It was good!” . . .And jumped straight into the pool.

For this Holiday season, we were inspired by the Maramures people of Translyvania. Located in the northwestern region of Romania, the Maramures live in villages where countless century-old traditions are still encorporated into daily routines.
During celebrations, the Maramures wear their traditional costume, which is primarily black and white with hints of red. We love this classic outfit because of the mix of plush textures and the heavy embroidered embellishments.
While this influence is found throughout our entire Hungarian Holiday collection, the Bucharest Floral dress reflects our true love of these Maramures traditional outfits. With an elegant embroidered pattern and texture on plush velvet, the Bucharest Floral dress is the perfect party dress!

To share our love for these Maramures traditions, we are now offering the Bucharest Floral dress at the great price of $49.50! Regularly $85, this promotional price is available on our website and at participating retailers [see below]

Just in time for holiday photos (and holiday photo cards), we have a few tips from our professional photographer friends at Wardrobe Wednesday!
Today, we finish with tips from photographers Lindsay, Rebecca, and Kelly on lighting techniques and posing strategies.
1. Find Natural Light When Shooting Indoors- by Lindsay Horn

Is it too cold to shoot outdoors? Don’t worry, you can create beautiful images using the natural light available in your house. First, turn OFF your flash. Next you will need to find the best location inside your house. When shooting indoors, I usually look for North or South facing windows (to avoid any direct light) and large openings (i.e. patio doors, bay windows, or a series of windows close together). Don’t be afraid to move furniture if necessary! Once you’ve picked your spot, make sure to turn off any artificial lighting in the area. Now it’s time to set up your subjects. Place them either directly in front of and facing the window (front lighting) or at a 45 or 90 degree angle to the window (side lighting). When using front lighting, you will position yourself near the window with your back to it, but make sure that you aren’t blocking too much of the light. When using side lighting, position yourself next to the window, shooting across the opening towards your subjects. Are your kiddos extra-wriggly? Pull over your favorite armchair or a nice dining room chair for seating, it can add a nice touch! — Lindsay, Lindsay Horn Photography
2. No Natural Light? Taking Photos in Low Light Conditions- by Rebecca Keeling
Yep, we’re all guilty of it, especially during a favorite photo op like Christmas. You want the ambiance of your beautiful glowing tree, whether it’s for a do-it-yourself family portrait by the lights, or your kids feverishly ripping the wrapping off their gifts…pop goes the flash of your camera and it looks more like a deer-in-the-headlights nightmare rather than the fabulous image you saw in your viewfinder. Depending on what type of camera you have, there are several ways to get around this issue. If you have a DSLR, meaning that you can change the lens on your camera, here are a few options for you:

1. Your flash does not have to be your enemy in situations like this. If you prefer to keep your camera in auto mode, let your flash go to town, just tone it down a bit. There are lots of cool little light modifiers for pop-up flashes these days, such as The Puffer by Gary Fong, or The Lightscoop; both of which help to diffuse or bounce the light from your flash, giving it a much softer appearance. You can also go into your menu and reduce the flash output.
2. Turn off your flash! I know, scary thought…but that’s the beauty of your DSLR camera. You have total control, if you want it! One of my favorite modes to shoot in is Aperture Priority…it’s the little “Av” on your mode dial. The great thing about this mode is that the camera sets the shutter speed for you, and you get to set the aperture. The smaller the aperture number, like f/2.8 (also known as a large aperture…I know, kind of confusing), the more light your lens is letting into your camera. With a little extra ambient light, you just might be able to take your Christmas photos without any flash at all! Just make sure your shutter speed stays fast enough so that you don’t get blurry pics of the unwrapping fury. Play with it, see what works…there’s really no “right” or “wrong” way!
For point and shoot cameras, you’ll want to be sure to shoot in portrait mode. If you have a menu option that has something to do with flash exposure compensation, you might try dialing your flash down a bit, so it looks a little more natural. Depending on your camera, you also might be able to set your ISO higher, set your white balance to the little light bulb symbol (incandescent), or even set your aperture, as well. The idea is, don’t just settle on the auto mode. Have fun, try something different…you just might create the best Christmas photos your family has ever seen! — Rebecca, Rebecca Keeling Studios
3. Don’t Just “Say Cheese!”- by Kelly V.
When it comes to taking great photos for the holidays, take a cue from your little ones and be on the move!

It can be incredibly frustrating for mom and tot when you’re trying to get a squirmer to sit still for posed photo after posed photo. You may have a vision of your kids sitting perfectly by the tree wearing their Christmas best and smiling sweetly, but in reality, you’re more likely to have one playing with an ornament and the other inspecting the inside of her dress. And after 20 minutes of pleading, bargaining and bribes, perhaps even tears.
Instead of forcing them to “sit still and smile,” try making a game of it. Have them stand next to each other and tell them you’re going to count to three. When you get to three, see who can jump the highest. When they land, they’ll be grinning and looking to you to pronounce the winner — which is exactly what you want! You’ll have the attention of all of your kids at the same time and those natural smiles you know and love. If they need more direction such as “get closer,” say it with excitement and urgency. Then do it again. When they tire out, try having them sit. You’ll likely have a few minutes of their attention and keep it by asking them how much fun they just had.
If you have older kids who understand posing for a few minutes, take advantage by trying a few different angles. Don’t just stand in front of them, get down to their level by squatting, kneeling or even sitting. It will produce a much more natural result.
And don’t be afraid to get close! I know you want to show off those coordinated dresses and sweater sets, but mix it up by taking a few close-up shots, too. They’re so intimate and personal that they may just end up being your favorites! — Kelly, Kelly V Photography
