Have you ever seen a bird of paradise flower? I never had, until I moved to California. They flower everywhere here, lining gardens and growing like weeds in front of stores. Sometimes I forget about them until I have visitors from out of town, who can’t believe how easily they grow in California.
Birds of paradise are popular in Mexico as well, and we couldn’t turn down the opportunity to create a dress influenced both by the flower and its namesake bird. In a mercado in Mexico City we found a woman’s shirt (above right) that became the inspiration for our Bird of Paradise dress (above left).
Lightweight poplin cotton, this dress is perfect for hot summers, and can be layered over our radish-colored leggings for cooler evenings.
Do you have a favorite bird or flower you’d like to see on a Tea dress?
Behind the Design Wednesdays: Every week Tea writes about our designers’ inspiration for our current collection of clothing.
To start off our new Behind the Design Wednesdays and to kick off our new Modern Mexico collection for girls and boys, we thought we’d post a video of footage shot while our designers were traveling around Mexico. We’ll release more of this collection in the coming weeks! We hope you feel as inspired as we do.
Peacocks were popular in the Modernisme and Art Nouveau movements (right). We especially loved these lesser known drawings of peacocks by two of Spain’s most famous artists (left), Salvador Dalí (top) and Joan Miró (bottom).
We paid tribute to all these in our fun summer Peacock Graphic Tee.
One of the things we love about our clothes here at Tea is our commitment to cotton. Soft, cozy, stretchy for running and jumping, easy to wash and long-lasting, cotton is in every item we make. One type of cotton fabric we’re celebrating this season is our slub jersey:

Slub is made through weaving uneven threads of yarn into fabric. Called “slubs”, each bump in the yarn was historically viewed as a mistake when hand weaving yarn, but today slub has become an intentional modern aesthetic. At Tea we love slub fabric for its subtle texture and lightweight summery feel.

With the clocks turned ahead, it’s starting to feel a lot like spring. And for those of you taking a spring break (or just thinking or wishing for warmer weather), we’ve put together our favorite must-have looks for girls and boys.
Spring Break Must-Haves for Girls:
from left: We have our butterfly-adorned Mariposa Top, paired with our classic Paperbag Shorts. The Marisol Hoodie is a perfect warm layer for windy evenings on the beach, over the Racerback Stripe Tank in asparagus green, and comfy French Terry Shorts. The Songbird Banded Dress can be dressed up or down, and the Citron Flora Playdress encourages adventures anywhere, anytime. Pair anything and everything with our brightly-colored Espadrilles and you’re ready to go!
Spring Must-Haves for Boys:
from left: Our Goril Graphic Tee gives strength for all expeditions, and the Cut Off Cord Shorts and Sidewalk Surfers in Dark Brown or Grey are a perfect match. Mix and match outfits with our Tortuga and Barcelona Tees over Long Cargo Shorts. Instead of traditional layers, roll up and down when the weather changes with our Slub Polo and Painter Roll Up Pants.
Check back with us in a month or so and we’ll have lots more summery clothes from our new Costa Brava collection to add to the list. Summer at Tea will be all about maritime style with a vintage vibe, made modern. Until then, happy spring travels!
