Say hello to indigo! It’s no secret that America has a long-standing indigo obsession, and trending this season is a revival of this original American basic. From deep indigo to vintage denim, blues in every hue are popping up everywhere this spring!
Indigo dye dates back to ancient times, but it wasn’t until the American Revolution that it began to make a name for itself here in the states. Its high value and long shelf-life made it the perfect trading commodity, quickly earning it the name “blue gold”. At that time, indigo garments were reserved for high society and high valued items like our very own American flag. That’s right, the original stripes of the flag were dyed with indigo!
With the rise of the industrial workforce in the early to mid 1900s, indigo blue clothing—cotton shirts, pants and coveralls—became more mainstream, serving as the staple of American workwear. Its rich dark pigment was perfect for masking dirt, grit and grease, which was important when washing was not a modern day convenience.
In the 1930’s, blue jeans and bandanas were popularized by Hollywood Westerns and the rise of cowboy culture, spotted on box office icons like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. Today, they’re a staple among citizens across the nation!
