Mandala means “circle” in Sanskrit and is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the Universe. It has been said that creating mandalas helps stabilize, integrate and re-order inner life.
We designed this mandala in hopes that you and your little citizens will decorate it over and over again. In India, mandalas are made of many different types of objects. We’ve gathered household items to create a few different types mandalas ourselves!
What will you come up with? Share it with us using #MakeAMandala on Instagram.
First up, fruit!
Try using different colored beans to decorate your mandala.
Use cereal to outline different areas of your mandala.
Gather all of your toy cars, trucks, tractors and airplanes — then arrange them by color. Remember, ROYGBIV!
Grab arts and crafts materials to decorate your mandala.
Have a collection of My Little Ponies? Dolls? Stuffed animals? Make a mandala!
Inspired by the sand mandalas of Tibetan Buddhists, we created decorated the mandala with colored sand. With time, patience and a few straws to help with accuracy — you’ll have your own colorful sand mandala in no time. Enjoy the destruction of it too, it’s part of the traditional process (really!).
You can color your mandala too, but by placing different objects on top of the mandala you’ll be able to use your one print out time and time again. We’d love to see your mandala covered in sticks and rocks, legos, all things yellow — the options are endless.
