Meet Evan, our Inspiring Little Citizen from Denton, Texas. A brave little dude, Evan has been putting up a fierce fight against Leukemia for a number of years. He is currently seeking treatment at the Children’s Medical Center in Dallas where he is always the center of the party. Despite the tough cards he’s been dealt, Evan always has a smile on his face. His positive spirit fills up the hospital halls.
After being treated for some time, Evan thought to himself “just because kids are in the hospital doesn’t mean they can’t have fun and still play like kids”. So, he and his parents involved patients and medical staff to create Evan’s Avengers, bringing video games like Mario Cart to life in the halls of the hospital.
Read on to learn more about Evan and how he’s setting out to make a difference.
Tell us a bit about yourself…Â
I am 11 years old and about to start the 6th grade. I love video games, watching funny YouTube videos, ALL the Marvel movies, and hanging out with my friends.
How did you get involved in helping others?
When I was in the hospital, Mary (my Child Life Specialist) thought I could help talk with kids who were having a tough time. My family and I started organizing pumpkin patches, Easter egg hunts and Christmas goody bags to help get kids out of their rooms and having fun.
How does helping others make you feel?
It makes me feel good that I can help somebody smile.
What do you hope the donation from Tea will accomplish?
I hope to use the donation to support pediatric cancer research through the Kids Shouldn’t Have Cancer Foundation, and to provide scholarship funding for special needs students and young adults through the organization Night of Superstars.
What do you want to do next? Do you have any big plans or ideas to make your community a better place?
We are starting the Evan’s Avengers Foundation to raise money for Childhood Cancer research, and raise awareness that only 4% of funds go towards childhood cancer research. We would also like to help other children and families who are undergoing long-term hospital treatment.Â
