Venice is an otherworldly place. From the gilded gondolas and palaces that fill the Grand Canal to the architectural details of the buildings and footbridges connecting the city to its floating neighborhood islands. Venice thrives on mystery and awe. As you wander through the streets, it’s hard to miss the Venetian masks. These famous masks are a part the Carnival of Venice, an annual festival held in Venice typically held in February that marks the beginning of Lent. Similar events are held around the world, like Mardi Gras and Carnaval in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
These beautifully decorated masks have always been an important part of the Carnival costumes and maskmakers have always held a strong place in craftsmen society, even having their own guild! Masks can be made out of leather, porcelain or glass and are oftentimes hand painted and adorned with feathers or gems. We were amazed at all the different types and levels of decoration. They are truly works of art. Share the splendor and fantasy of Venetian masks with your little citizens in with our coloring activity. You can even through your own Carnival with friends!
Here are some templates you can print out to decorate your own Venetian mask at home. Color it, paint it, decorate it with glitter, feathers, stickers or anything you want. Make sure to share your creations with us by uploading your pictures to our gallery or sharing on Instagram using #TeaCollection or #littlecitizens.
